There were other Ava Lunas before this, and there was Ava before that. But our Ava Luna began with a promise that I made to Nathan in the summer of 2006, in Takamatsu, Japan. Nathan and I agreed that we would devote our twenties to a rock and roll band and compromise for nobody and be as weird and sad and joyous as we wanted. And when our band toured the world, we'd return to Japan and play a show right there, where we sat, on the roof of Takamatsu Station.
Our Ava Luna fulfilled most of that promise, and now that my twenties are over here is my birthday present for everybody. Recordings of me and some of the best people I've known in my life, fooling around, piecing things together. Some of these things are old, some are newer, some are unfinished. This isn't an album, there's no story here, at least not the type that we'd calculate. Rather, it's the story of a bunch of friends making songs for lots of years, holed up some place or another, optimistic, quixotic.
Up til now Ava Luna has been a beautiful promise, and after now it can be something different. With these songs, everything we've ever recorded is on the internet now. That's our gift to you. happy birthday everybody

A song that we tried many times and never quite figured out. Really fun to play live. Rockin' on the modern dog.
Recorded at the schoolhouse on Bushwick Ave, Summer '12

3. Chiseled Abs
An earlier version originally appeared on a split tour cassette with Celestial Shore, January 2012. This version was mixed for inclusion on Electric Balloon but didn't make the final tracklist. Carlos re-recorded these vocals with Jimmy in Miami.

mixed by Jimmy Douglass, Summer '13

5. Water Duct
Recorded after Ice Level, this has been a live favorite of ours for a while. Was mixed by Jimmy for possible inclusion on Electric Balloon but we decided against it.
Recorded by Brian McTear and Jon Low at Miner Street in Philadelphia, PA, sometime in 2012. Mixed by Jimmy Douglass, Summer 2013
6. Rain
Felicia's song, we added some overdubs and put it out as a flexi. The only song we've ever recorded that Carlos doesn't appear on, though he did mix it.
Originally appeared as part of Keep In Touch flexi series, 2015
Carlos' original demo of Daydream, recorded in his bedroom in the hours before Hurricane Sandy.
Carlos played everything
8. Crown (original)
The first version of this song, tracked at the Kagan House. We ended up re-tracking this at the Kagan House six months later. Nathan had left the band at that point so we took his synth part from this version and stretched it to fit the new version. Thank you Nathan!
The b-side of the abandoned No F seven-inch. Carlos added a section to the song and we re-recorded it for Ice Level.
Alex smith - drums
Becca - vocals
Felicia - vocals
Anna Sian - vocals
Carlos - vocals, keys
Nathan - synth
Ethan - bass
Recorded by Carlos in the Gravesend basement, 2010
10. Crystal Pumpkin
Carlos's original demo of the song Electric Balloon. It was called "Crystal Pumpkin" until the very last second.
Carlos played everything
11. Black Dog (original mix)
The pre Dave Fridmann rough mix of this song includes a lot of ambient sounds that got buried in the final mix. We stretched a bunch of mic cables out into the woods outside of Cindy Gooden's house, where we were recording. Dave's mix is far superior but the ambient sounds here evoke the ghosts that were in the woods that night.
Recorded at the Gooden family house in Benton, MS in May 2014
12. Carbon (original mix)
The pre Dave Fridmann mix of this song. Dave suggested a change to the beginning of the song, so now here you can hear the original idea as Carlos imagined.
supported by 8 fans who also own “Takamatsu Station”
I think its crazy how you can hear her smile or grin in some tracks. Also, just so well produces. Thanks for this beautiful piece of art. quintenzirkel
